Agriculture, Veneto raises alarm: "Brussels' unsustainable decisions"

Veneto agriculture is under attack due to the European Commission's recent proposals for the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2028-2034. The regional Agriculture Councillor, Federico Caner, has expressed serious concern, calling Brussels' decisions "short-sighted and unacceptable."
The proposal, which envisages a reduction of nearly €90 billion for European agriculture, introduces a unified financing system and, in particular, excludes active pensioners from direct contributions. This decision, according to Caner, ignores the reality of the Veneto region, where over 40% of beneficiaries (approximately 23,000 farmers over 65) risk losing support. The estimated economic impact for the Veneto region is approximately €40 million per year .
The councilor criticized Brussels' approach, which penalizes retirees in the name of generational change, without offering concrete alternatives. "Penalizing them in the name of a supposed generational change, without offering concrete alternatives, is profoundly unfair and irresponsible," Caner stated. The most serious consequence, he warned, could be a "domino effect" that would lead to the closure of numerous companies, making the sector less attractive to young people and paving the way for unsustainable solutions such as synthetic food and cheap labor.
According to the councilor, the Veneto Region is ready to fight at European level to protect local farmers and prevent measures that, if implemented, could irreparably compromise the future of agriculture.
